Yu Runcang (male, born in March 1930, member of CPC, academician of China Academy of Engineering, awarded Special Government Allowances of the State Council), was  graduated from Northeastern University of Technology in 1954, and acted as the principal engineer and deputy chief engineer of China Nonferrous Engineering and Research Institute. Now, he is a senior consulting expert of China ENFI Engineering Corporation. And now he serves as a member of China Mining Association, a vice chairman of NFSOC Mining Academic Committee, the consulting expert of China International Engineering Consulting Corporation, the member of WMC International Organization Committee and the part-time associate doctoral candidate mentor of Central South University of Technology.

He is a well-known nonferrous metal mining expert of China. For over 40 years, he has undertaken more than 50 tasks concerning engineering design, scientific research and technical guidance, creatively solved many technical problems in mine development, and completed abundant pioneering works in promotion and application of new mining processes and technologies, and obtained outstanding achievements. He has won national and provincial special prize, first prize and second prize for technological progress for 5 times and the special prize of “National Best Engineering Design” for 1 time, and published two monographs as well as a large amount of theses. In 1986, he was titled as the “State-level Young or Middle-aged Expert with Outstanding Contributions”.

He has been dedicated to mining method study and mine design for decades. He conducted the test work of “room and pillar with bolting” and verified the feasibility by applying the method to Xikuangshan antimony mine. Due to effective application of scientific achievements to production, the ore loss ratio was lowered by 40%, which creates precedent of application of the method to underground mining in China. In reference to the theory “New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM)”, he effectively controlled drift collapses, and made outstanding contributions to improving resources utilization, mine production capacity and economic benefits of enterprises. In the design of Tongkuangyu copper Mine, as the leader of the “block caving method” consulting expert group of ZTS Non-ferrous Metals, he actively supported application of the “block caving method”, and  thus created favorable conditions for turning loss into gains. When guiding the design of deep mining in Dongguashan Copper Mine, he made vigorous efforts to realize the “exploration-mining combination” and withdraw ores in advance during preproduction, and actively got involved in building the first large-sized zero-waste mine in China with technologies and principles of “no waste rocks withdrawn from the mine, and no tailings discharged into tailings pond”.
